about

Yellow Mountain Project

What is it?

My Yellow Mountain project is a live SP-404 video shot atop Huang Shan and a fall time vibe beat tape accompaniment.

When I first learned about the SP-404 around 2013 most of the videos I saw on youtube were of people playing tracks and using the FX like a Dj would. When I got my Sp-404 however, I was coming from a musicianship background so I naturally approached it like an instrument, something to be played.

When you play a piano you have to constantly strike the keys for the song to continue to develop. If you hit a wrong note you can mess it all up, but you can redeem yourself with a smooth recovery on the next note. Little mistakes and accidental changes in rhythm and timing like these give music character and style. It makes each performance of the music unique and encourages improvisation to take place.

I set out to lend these qualities to the way I played my SP-404. The way I cut the samples, how I arrange them on the pads, and the mentality I approach playing them with is all informed by this goal of musicianship. To my surprise, the first video I posted like this got a good response on youtube. So last August I set out with my friend and filmographer Luciano Joseph to climb up Huang Shan, set up on the edge of a cliff, and film another edition.

Two of the beats that I play in this video are versions of some of the first beats I made after moving to Shanghai in 2016. At the time I was playing with ways to combine my love of west coast funk influenced rap beats with the lofi hiphop vibe that is dominated by mostly east coast style. Since people had been asking on the first video if they could listen to the beats online, I figured I’d release a beat tape along with this new live video. With this companion beat tape I am really excited to share some of my favorite early beats that I’ve just never had the right opportunity to release.
